Malta Day 5

Today we wanted to explore Valletta some more. The day proved to be very hot and instead of wandering around the streets, we wanted to escape the heat into some museums. Unfortunately apparently they either don’t believe in air conditioning in museums in Valletta or don’t think it’s hot enough in October. 🙂

Our first destination was The Palace Armoury, which is an arms collection housed at the Grandmaster’s Palace. It was an interesting overview of arms and armor and the Palace was gorgeous.

After The Palace Armoury we headed to the National Museum of Archaeology because we wanted to see some of the artifacts that were uncovered at Hypogeum of Ħal-Saflieni and learn more about the ancient temples. Unfortunately the museum turned out to be somewhat of a disappointment as we were expecting a well-curated collection, but it turned out to be a bit of a mix-and-match without clear theme (unless Maltese history counts as a theme).

After the museum we decided to face the heat and go to the Upper Barrakka Gardens, which were supposed to be really beautiful. We weren’t disappointed and much to our surprise it was quite windy there and we enjoyed the views and not-so-hot October day.

The day was still very hot, so there was only so much we could take of it. 😀 We took the bus from Valletta back to Paceville and as much as I liked staying in Paceville, if you are planning on spending more time in Valletta, you should also stay there. The bus takes about an hour if there’s any traffic and there isn’t any air conditioning in the bus either. On the upside it is relatively cheap, only 2€ per person, so if you have time and aren’t bothered by the hot weather, then it’s a perfectly good alternative.

In the evening we decided that it was time to try some sushi and so we were pulling on the restaurant’s door 5 min before its opening time. We chose Okurama, which was also located like 3 min walk away from our hotel. The restaurant didn’t look like much from the outside, but it had decent reviews and the sushi turned out to be quite good. If I remember correctly there was a buffet menu for about 25€ per person, but it came with some limitations (like you could order only 3 different types of sushi from a more expensive category), which was impossible for us to figure out, but one of the waiters helped us. As I said, sushi tasted fresh and was good and the price was ok as well.
