Packing List

This year I’ve been traveling at least once every month, so I’ve done a lot of packing. I don’t even take my carry on suitcase back to the cellar storage anymore because I use it once or twice a month. So I try to optimize packing as much as I can, so I spend as little time doing it and still not forget something important.

What I have done is to collect a list of everything I have ever needed on a trip in a Word document and I keep adding if I notice that I’ve needed something I’ve never needed before. Every time before a trip, I save it under a new name and first remove all the items I won’t need on that trip.

My list looks like this:

Before trip

  • Print flight confirmations 1
  • Print hotel confirmations 1
  • Print directions to the hotel 1
  • Download offline maps
  • Withdraw money
  • Download books/movies to iPad
  • Get a guidebook 2
  • Plan the trip 3

Notes:

  1. I prefer to have some things printed in case the phone gets broken or stolen. Or that I don’t have to deal with expensive phone in the middle of the night somewhere.
  2. I don’t like to buy guidebooks anymore. I used to always get a guidebook and then store them in my bookshelf. About two years ago, I got this minimalism awakening and realized that the books were taking a lot of space and guidebooks get outdated really quickly, so you can rarely use them again. So I stopped buying them for the most part. Instead I usually borrow them from the library, I have bought some as ebooks and if I buy an actual paperback, I make sure that I get rid of it after the trip (I usually give it to a friend or a coworker if somebody is traveling there or just use some Facebook recycling group).
  3. This is a very important part. More on this later. 😀
