I finally got a chance to visit a friend of mine in Switzerland 1,5 years after she moved. She managed to take some time off work, so we spent five days at the end of October exploring a small part of Switzerland.
She had to work on Friday, so I meant to come around five in the evening, but I accidentally bought a flight, which was in Zürich already around noon. Really need to pay better attention when booking stuff.
I arrived in Zürich and took my suitcase to my friend’s apartment. It is super easy to take a train from Zürich airport to the city and luckily my friends could leave a key to her apartment in a “secret place”. 🙂 I left my suitcase and headed to the city centre without any other plans than to walk around.
Zürich is a very cute city and it was a beautiful and warm day especially for the end of October. There were people sitting on terraces enjoying their meals and drinks and sitting on the benches near riverside.
One side of the Limmat river has more of an “old town” feeling. The other side has a small mountain from which you can get a great view of the city and an unbelievable amount of watch shops and other kind of luxury shopping. This side of town makes you feel poor even if you’re quite comfortably off. 😀
I also visited Fraumünster church, which had stained glass windows in the choir, which were painted by Marc Chagall. Photos were not allowed inside the church, but I found the windows not quite worth the 5 CHF entrance fee you pay (cash only). Zürich doesn’t seem to have a lot of must-see sights and this was marked as a top sight in the Lonely Planet guidebook, so I just had to see what the top sight in Zürich looks like. 🙂
My friend finally got off work around 6:30 in the evening and we decided to grab dinner in a restaurant I spotted walking around town. We had dinner at Baltho Küche & Bar, which turned out to be a hotel restaurant. They had a really awesome cocktail list online, but there was nothing on the restaurant menu. Luckily we asked and got the bartender to make us some cocktails.
The food was pretty good, but the food in Switzerland isn’t particularly great, so in hindsight this was one of the best meals we had during our trip. Cocktails were top-notch, but the next time I’m in Switzerland, I will just settle for fast food. It’s as bad or good, but costs way less. The same goes if I ever go back to Norway. It’s McDonald’s and Subway all the way. 😀
